why are they called the sound tigers?

It is because they are located near a Sound.

P.T. Barnum has nothing to do with why they are the Tigers. The origin of the name is as follows:
The reason why the name starts with 'Sound' is because they initially wanted to somehow get the Long Island Sound in the name.
The Tigers actually came from a contest where fans voted to name the team. There were many entries that were animals, and it turned out that Tigers was the most popular in the contest.
Hence the team name was born as 'Sound Tigers'
